CROWN DETHRONED AS THE LOCAL KING OF BILLIONAIRES
[NORTH SPORTS FINAL Edition]
Chicago Tribune (pre-1997 Fulltext)
-
Chicago, Ill.
You'll be happy to learn Chicago's billionaires-as calculated by Forbes magazine-are having a decent year. Well, maybe not Lester Crown. The magazine has ranked the world's billionaires, and Crown is no longer this city's richest entry. He's at $1.92 billion, down from the $2.4 billion the magazine said he was worth in '94. That puts Jay and Robert Pritzker-each at $2.2 billion, where they were last year-at Chicago's top. Our other billionaires each improved their totals over last year. According to Forbes, they are: the Smith family (Illinois Tool Works), $1.99 billion; the Wrigley family (chewing gum), $1.45 billion; the Donnelley family (printing), $1.4 billion; and Robert Galvin (Motorola), $1.36 billion. Coincidence?: Who owns News of the World, the tabloid that captured the interview with Hugh Grant's, er, late-night passenger Stella Marie Thompson (aka Divine Brown)? Rupert Murdoch. And who owns 20th Century Fox, producers of Grant's soon-to-open movie "Nine Months"? Murdoch. Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner.
