Abstract (Document Summary)

"In listening sessions in nine Vermont communities and surveys, 200 young women and girls told us they know very little about personal finance, they couldn't say what it would cost for them to live on their own, what various jobs pay, how to fill out a tax form, how to open a checking account." Among the plans: to lobby for a redoubling of real-world opportunities in schools so girls can stretch and try out careers; push for more instruction in personal finance (which is not a required class in Vermont, although many high schools and some middle schools offer units on the topic), and expand "career" mentoring programs that match students with employees in various fields.
