Basketball; Parquet Patter; C's Top 20 Players DJ was a steal No. 16: Dennis Johnson Of all the great deals Red Auerbach engineered for the Celtics, bringing Dennis Johnson to Boston in 1983 ranks high on the list. Johnson was acquired for backup big man Rick Robey, who played just three more years before retiring. Johnson, meanwhile, was busy re-establishing himself as one of the game's finest guards. He teamed with Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish to lead the Celtics to their 15th NBA championship in 1983-84, and to the franchise's 16th and final title in 1985-86. Some consider the 1985-86 Celtics, who finished the regular season with a 67-15 record - before defeating Chicago, Atlanta, Milwaukee and Houston in the playoffs - to be the best in franchise history. They were a magnificent team that could dominate opponents at both ends of the floor. Johnson mastered the defensive end, but his ability to score in the clutch made him a dangerous force on offense. Basketball; Parquet Patter; This Week in NBA History; NBA Notes Celts lacking D-sire Do you ever wonder why Celtics coach Rick Pitino talks incessantly about the virtues of defense? His team's inability to win on the road is Exhibit A. While putting together an abysmal 4-17 record away from the FleetCenter, the Celtics have proven time and again they are energized by their offensive exploits. A few easy transition baskets and they can look like world-beaters at the other end of the court. But any kind of a scoring drought appears to break the team's spirit too easily, leading to a steady decline in intensity at the defensive end. This is unacceptable behavior for a team with postseason aspirations. A continuation of that mindset in the early stages of the second-half schedule will have the Celtics gearing for another draft lottery appearance in June. Pitino knows that. He watched his team roll out the red carpet for Charlotte (52 percent shooting), Miami (55 percent) and Orlando (60 percent) on a disastrous
