Abstract (Document Summary)

In the famous 1953 movie "From Here to Eternity," Deborah Kerr and Burt Lancaster locked lips on a secluded beach while the waves washed over their feet. The rocky inlet on Oahu's southeastern shore was known ever after as Eternity Cove. In "50 First Dates," Henry Roth ([Adam Sandler]) and Lucy Whitmore ([Drew Barrymore]) share an innocent, happy first kiss the real first kiss in a movie predicated on a never-ending string of first meetings because of Lucy's short-term memory loss.

In the first scene of "First Dates," Henry tries to get on a sea plane to escape a tourist he's been dating a few days. It was filmed at the pier where the Island Seaplane service arrives and departs on its 30- and 60-minute tours of Oahu. Both tours fly east, giving riders an aerial view of Waikiki, Diamond Head, the Koko Head Crater and the rocky southeastern shore home to Eternity Cove. The flight continues along the windward side with views of the Koolau Mountains. The longer flight passes over the fabled surfing stretch known as the North Shore, then through the central Oahu pineapple fields and to Pearl Harbor before ending back at the pier near Honolulu Airport.
