Jon B. Platt, Boston's most active presenter of commercial theater, has purchased the Charles Playhouse from Frank Sugrue, who has operated the theater for 36 years.

This acquisition gives Platt, who also operates the Colonial Theater, a virtual lock on the downtown theater scene, except for the spectacles booked into the Wang Center for the Performing Arts.
