Hobson's choice: a demanding camp
[City Edition]
| Publication : | Boston Globe (pre-1997 Fulltext)- Boston, Mass. |
| Author : | Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff |

| Abstract (Document Summary) |
| Scott Cooper, who has played forHobson for two years in the minors, knows exactly what to expect. He's been through the workouts that he says are heavy on running. He's been through the pregame drills, actually pre-batting practice drills, to work on the fundamentals the team botched the night before. Will [Butch Hobson] be the same here? Cooper shrugs, but he says, "Why should he change the way he manages? Why should he change the things that got him here? He'd like to approach things the same way he did in Pawtucket and New Britain. He knows that because of the volume of players -- 23 pitchers and 21 positional -- he won't be able to make it as personalized as he wants at first. But personalization is going to be big with Hobson. His first meeting with pitchers and catchers will take place at 9 a.m. tomorrow (only Dana Kiecker, whose wife is expecting a baby, will be missing). When the full squad reports, Hobson will have the Chain O' Lakes Park gates closed while he takes his team in the stands and gives his "Welcome to Camp Butch" address. He says he spent three hours at dinner with his coaches the other night thinking about a batting order. Ellis Burks' name came up often. Hobson says he's spoken to Burks, and though he still doesn't know if Burks will be his leadoff hitter, "Ellis told me he'd do anything I asked. That's all I can ask for." hide... | | Scott Cooper, who has played forHobson for two years in the minors, knows exactly what to expect.
