Abstract (Document Summary)

I was, to begin with, a city boy, born and raised in northeast Brooklyn. My parks were paved quadrangles. My trees--and they were all just "trees" regardless of shape or style--were what grew out of the wreckage of tumbled buildings or holes in the sidewalk.
