After suffering a heart attack in the late 1970s, Mr. Lupoli sold the businesses and retired, concentrating on his family. [Sal Lupoli] played football at Northeastern in the late 1980s and Mr. Lupoli never missed a game.
Father and son frequently talked about Sal's postgraduation plans. Mr. Lupoli encouraged him to consider a career in the food business. At first Sal demurred, remembering how hard his father had worked.
When it came time to expand, Mr. Lupoli always prodded his sons to take the next step. He urged them to purchase the property in which the stores were located. He encouraged them to branch out from Sal's Pizza stores to Mary's Pasta and Deli stores, and Sal's kitchen, which sells prepared takeout foods.
