Abstract (Document Summary)

They join Hamed Karzai, 46, who was named by conference delegates early today as the country's interim leader. Qanooni, [Mohammad Fahim], and [Abdullah Abdullah] kept their respective posts in Karzai's Cabinet, UN officials said today.

Abdullah, Qanooni, and Fahim were all members of the Jamiat-i- Islami party, the backbone of the Northern Alliance, which [Ahmad Shah Massood] led before Arab militants assassinated him on Sept. 9. Like Massood, they were all born in the Panjsher Valley.
