Generating the heat is a brewing rematch between rookie state Senator Brian Joyce of Milton and Boston City Councilor Maureen Feeney of Dorchester.

Joyce beat Feeney by less than 400 votes in a December special election to represent the city-suburb district, and the two pols barely paused before starting to jockey for position in the coming September Democratic primary.

Emerging as a curious, early battleground in the race are the liberal-leaning precincts of Jamaica Plain, where neither Joyce nor Feeney rolled up big numbers in December. (In that four-way election, Jamaica Plain threw most of its votes to local City Councilor Maura Hennigan and Dorchester activist Eleanor LeCain.)
