Abstract (Document Summary)

Caritas Christi Health Care, in a move to create a regional Catholic health care network, yesterday said it has agreed to merge with St. Joseph Health Services of Rhode Island.

Caritas chief executive Dr. Michael Collins said the merger will help the hospital system gain leverage with health maintenance organizations such as Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Tufts Health Plan, both of which are seeking to establish a foothold in Rhode Island and other New England states.

For St. Joseph, the merger would give it more buying power as well as access to Caritas contracts with health insurance companies, said H. John Keimig, chief executive of the Catholic hospital system in Providence.
