Abstract (Document Summary)

One thing [Justin Masterson] doesn't lack is confidence. First he says he wants to be like John Smoltz, flitting between starting and relieving. He pulls out other names: Derek Lowe, Brandon Webb. "People who aren't here looking on, they're just like, `Wow. Struggling!' And I'm like, `Yeah, there's a little bit of that going on, but there's also some other factors in there,"' Masterson said before the promotion. "We've been working, figuring some stuff out.

Clay Buchholz was replaced on the Eastern League All-Star team yesterday. Buchholz is not available to pitch in the game, given his participation in the Futures Game, part of the major league All-Star weekend in San Francisco ... Bubba Bell was also promoted from Lancaster to Portland Wednesday. He had tweaked a back injury this week that had bothered him earlier in the season. He was taken out of Sunday's game, then missed Monday's, before returning to the lineup. Bell's numbers with the JetHawks: .370, 22 HRs, 83 RBIs, 1.120 OPS ... Pawtucket's Bobby Scales has started in left field his last five games. He's normally an infielder ... Lowell center fielder Ryan Kalish has 12 stolen bases in 13 games. His 12 steals are as many as or more than 12 teams in the New York-Penn League.
