Abstract (Document Summary)

[Mariah Carey] is quite capable, however, of hiring four backup singers to fill in the vocal blanks, 10 dancers to interpret the subtext of "Through the Rain" and "My All," a tasty five-piece band, an acrobatic master of ceremonies, and as many stylists as it takes to pour her into silver tube dresses and satin gym shorts. And though the new material is genuinely vapid (Carey's cover of Def Leppard's "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" is the best song on the album, a scary thing in both concept and execution), some of the singer's earlier material was genuinely appealing: "Dream Lover," with its infectious soul-pop groove; sweet, jaunty "Always Be My Baby"; the showstopper "Vision of Love," where Carey dared the evening's only ambitious vocal licks. They were mostly in tune.
