In the Chinese composer Guo Wenjing's superb 1997 Concertino for cello and chamber orchestra, the soloist (Mimi Yu, in a terrific performance) gets locked in repeated figures, only to break out into pentatonic lyricism, while the orchestra contributes a swarm of exotic, avian sounds; the mobile-like form confounds classical practice, but Guo's generously over-the-top supply of special effects carried the piece.
