Abstract (Document Summary)

MIAMI -- This is the message Jeff Conine may hear in the aftermath of the World Series, win or lose.

The Marlins' 31-year-old first baseman, the only player still on the roster who was taken in the 1992 expansion draft and just one of two players (Alex Arias) from the Marlins' Opening Day roster in '93, has resigned himself to the likelihood that he won't be back next season.

With the club up for sale, the Marlins are expected to pare perhaps as much as $15 million from the payroll. Even if owner Wayne Huizenga holds onto the club, Conine probably will not be protected in the next expansion draft.
