Abstract (Document Summary)

The US Environmental Protection Agency has agreed to pay for the cleanup of a Roxbury electroplating plant that was shut down for illegal hazardous waste handling, ending months of neighbors' concerns about the mess left behind. The state Environmental Strike Force took the extraordinary measure of closing Modern Electroplating last August after investigators found cyanide waste that had not been removed for years and dozens of other violations. But after paying $60,000 toward the cleanup, the company ran out of money, leaving state and city officials scrambling for help. (excerpt)
