Abstract (Document Summary)

Soon after that [Rachel Mathes] dropped out of the public eye; sometimes I wondered what happened to her. Then, this week, came an answer from an unexpected quarter, a press release from Grace Chapel in Lexington, where Mathes will sing a recital April 10 and teach a master class the following afternoon. According to her biography in the press release, in 1977, after just 10 years on the operatic stage, Mathes returned to her hometown, Birmingham, Ala., to begin a second career in teaching; she is currently on the faculty of Augustana College in Illinois. Her Lexington program is called "Operatic Invocations, Laments, Invocations, Curses and Prayers" and consists of arias by Monteverdi, Bellini, Wagner, Verdi, Puccini and Strauss.
