Abstract (Document Summary)

Rev. William R. Callahan, SJ, said he will appeal the order by his religious superior, Rev. Robert E. Manning, SJ, the Jesuit provincial of New England, whose office is in Boston.

In two formal canonical warnings to Father Callahan, the provincial directed him to leave the Quixote Center in Mt. Rainier, Md., where the priest coordinates Quest for Peace. That organization has reportedly raised as much as $227 million in aid and contributed services since 1984.

The action in the Callahan case follows a letter by Rev. Hans Peter Kovenbach, father general of the Society of Jesus, to the 27,000 Jesuits worldwide, warning them against "embarrassing" and "controversial" public statements.
