Last year's court ruling did not specifically deal with AIDS, but the Justice opinion concurred with the US Surgeon General that AIDS-infected individuals suffer from physical impairment "that may substantially limit a person's major life activities."

"It's nice Justice is heading the right direction," said Vic Basile, executive director of the Human Rights Campaign Fund, which raises money to fight AIDS. "The department has at least begun to wake up to the fact that AIDS discrimination is a problem."
