Abstract (Document Summary)

Gerard Depardieu, the burly French actor who has often been compared to the late Jean Gabin, was named best actor of the year for two outstanding performances: One as the close-mouthed peasant in Daniel Vigne's "The Return of Martin Guerre" and the other as the charismatic veteran of the French Revolution in Andrzej Wajda's "Danton."

Joanna Cassidy, who dodged bullets as a gutsy war correspondent in "Under Fire," also earned a large number of votes in this category along with Bonnie Bedelia ("Heart Like a Wheel") and Shirley MacLaine ("Terms of Endearment").
