Abstract (Document Summary)

To reflect the population shifts, the seat was redistricted in 1974 and renamed the Norfolk and Suffolk District. Since then, power has continued to move towards the suburbs. The present state senator, Joseph F. Timilty, moved a few years ago from Mattapan to Canton.

Neither Boch nor [William R. Keating] think their suburban residency will hurt the constituency or affect the campaign. Both say they are spending equal time at coffee hours and door-to-door campaigning in both parts of the district, which includes the Boston neighborhoods of Mattapan, Roslindale, Hyde Park and Readville as well as the four suburban towns.

Timilty thinks that Keating, who has served eight years in the House, will be his successor. But Boch, who dropped out of active politics to raise five children, said she plans to give Keating a fight.
