The good news for the state's minority party is that several credible candidates, including state Sens. Brian Lees of East Longmeadow, Richard Tisei of Wakefield and Jane Swift of North Adams, are close to deciding whether to challenge incumbent Democratic congressmen next year.

That year the GOP ended the Democrats' 16-year stranglehold on all six constitutional offices with the election of Gov. Weld, Lt. Gov. Paul Cellucci and state Treasurer Joseph Malone.

Last year, as Weld and Cellucci ran up the score with an eye-popping record 42-percentage point margin over the Democratic tandem of Mark Roosevelt and Bob Massie -- and Malone tightened his grasp on the treasurer's job -- the GOP picked up one measly seat in the Senate.
