When [Stephen F. Lynch] was introduced by the dean of the state's congressional delegation, Representative Edward J. Markey, the supporters hooted, hollered, and gave Lynch a standing ovation. That prompted Markey, a Malden Democrat, to quip: "Being elected congressman from South Boston is like being elected president of the United States."

In an interview, Lynch said he knew he was following a legend but recalled the advice Moakley gave him after Lynch succeeded the legendary William Bulger in the state Senate. Moakley reminded Lynch that he had succeeded former US House Speaker John W. McCormack.
