Izzy Alcantara continues to make a case for another tour with the big club, with his every at-bat at Pawtucket's McCoy Stadium generating the kind of excitement Manny Ramirez's appearances have inspired at Fenway Park. With a two-run homer Friday night, his ninth in 10 games, Alcantara stayed on track for a Triple Crown, as he led the International League in batting (.347), home runs (24), and RBIs (61). He is on pace to obliterate Pawtucket's record for homers in a season (36), set by Jack Baker in 1976. Alcantara will start the Triple A All-Star Game July 11 for the IL, which means he could face Holbrook's Jim Mann, a former Massasoit Community College standout who is a closer for Houston's affiliate in New Orleans. Mann is 3-1 with a 1.45 ERA and 19 saves. The righthander was named to the Pacific Coast League team . . . Paxton Crawford, who for the second straight year has lost a key opportunity to return to the Sox because of an injury, left last Wednesday for Fort Myers, where he will try to work his way back after irritating a previous stress fracture in his lower back. He was joined on the trip to Florida by Pawtucket catcher Angelo Encarnacion, who is rehabbing after fouling a ball off his foot . . . Trenton first baseman Luis Garcia, a Mexican the Sox signed as a free agent in 1996, has been added to the Futures Game roster.
