1) Romantic. With his dark good looks, good taste and good manners, James Stenbeck on "As the World Turns" makes a dashing fantasy figure. His twin passions in life are beautiful women and race horses. Suffice it to say, Stenbeck is the only person in Oakdale who owns a Modigliani - an original mind you, not a print from the Harvard Coop.

5) Big Daddyish. Asa Buchanan on "One Life to Live" is an older version of J.R. Ewing - down to the Texas accent, the Stetson hat and a couple of hard- drivin' sons. Buchanan Enterprises includes oil wells, cattle horses, a football team and a record company called Lone Star Productions. Power hungry, corrupt and vindictive, Asa is one of those villains you love to hate.

The emergence of the midday millionaire has made for some interesting dialogue these days. A small sampling follows. Edward Quartermaine, between sips of brandy, to [Alex Wheeler] on "General Hospital": "People like us can't marry for love. That's a luxury for the poor." James Stenbeck to a house servant on "ATWT": "Have you seen my wife? She missed her riding lesson today and I haven't heard from her." Dorian Lord to Asa Buchanan on "OLTL": "I have a terrible emergency. I wonder if I might borrow your plane."
