[Gil Santos]' decision probably was spurred in part by the indecisiveness of Channel 56 general manager Jerry Walsh about rehiring him sooner. Walsh had pondered replacing Santos with [MIKE CRISPINO], who was an able substitute on three Celtics games last season. Traditionally, stations showcase their sports anchors with their own play-by-play assignments.
Santos said one of his regrets in giving up the Celtics job will be ending his nine-year association with analyst Bob Cousy. "He was a great guy to be on the road with as well as to broadcast with," Santos said.
Santos also is giving up approximately $40,000 annually. The station will save if it selects Crispino, whose added compensation would not approach what Santos received.
