Before leaving for Iraq last May, he attended a weeklong boot camp at Fort Benning in Georgia to learn a variety of new skills, from how to identify explosive devices to the proper way to treat a head wound. Later, Newell organized a Christmas concert at the British embassy, with the Iraqi symphony and American Army orchestras performing a program entitled "Peace Through Art."
