Many of the visitors lingered awhile, soaking up the freshness of the moment, before proceeding on their tour of the famous and not-so-famous also interred at Arlington - the explorer Richard Byrd, World War II hero Audie Murphy, Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. Surveying the vista of Washington across the Potomac River - from the Lincoln Memorial and Jefferson Memorial, to the Capitol and White House and the Washington Monument - Kennedy said that the view was so remarkable he could remain there forever.
