Before his death, Kennedy made a personal appeal to Patrick and state legislative leaders to change state law to allow the governor to appoint someone to the seat until the election is held. Lynch is a conservative whose antiabortion and antigay marriage views could alienate him from the largely liberal base that dominates Democratic primaries, but he would make a strong run at blue-collar voters.
