"Primary Colors" -- authored by Anonymous -- has now climbed to the top of the best-sellers list. Movie options, paperback rights, overseas sales are making its unknown author a millionaire. It triggers a bit of envy in our circle, of course, but we are more curious than envious. Everyone is a suspect.

The culprit could even be sitting at our table now, as we consider the case over lunch at a Manhattan restaurant, raising names with each forkful of food. We were all exposed to the 1992 Clinton campaign in one way or another. We know every character in the book, every likely suspect.

"Primary Colors" is, of course, the satirical look at life inside the '92 campaign of a certain Southern politician on his way to the top. It is a contemplation of the moral choices made along the way, a close-up view of the political world's underside. It is part "All the King's Men," Robert Penn Warren's classic, and part diary of the Clinton campaign, thinly disguised.
