The sequel, "Of Time and the River," has sold 1,000 copies. It focuses more on personalities. We learn about Saugus natives like Corporal Scott Procopio, the US Marine who was killed last year in Iraq; US Army Staff Sergeant Arthur DeFranzo, a World War II Medal of Honor recipient; James Franklin Jeffrey, who served as US ambassador to Albania; William Robinson, a former town clerk known as "Mr. Saugus" and who worked for the town for 50 years; and Francis "Skip" Moorehouse, a former town manager who is known for his proposal to bring sewers to Saugus.
"To tell the truth, it's another town. I hardly know it," said [John Burns], who has lived in Saugus for 81 years. "I'll walk through Cliftondale Square and I don't know anybody, and furthermore nobody else would know anybody because nobody stops, they're driving through; nobody stands to talk to one another. So, it's a far different town than the one we were writing about."
The team has produced two books about the history and people of Saugus, with [Tom Sheehan] and John Burns leading the drive; "A Gathering of Memories " was completed in 2000, and "Of Time and the River " came out last year. The team behind the Saugus histories, (from left) cartoonist Bob Sacco, Bob Wentworth, Tom Sheehan, and John Burns, are longtime residents who wanted to capture their love for the people and history of Saugus.
