"It was the experience of a lifetime," 16-year-old Katie Aselton said of having been named first runner-up in Tuesday's Miss Teen USA pageant, broadcast live on national television from Wichita, Kan. "There are no words to describe it."
Not bad for a girl who entered her first pageant in Portland this spring and took home the Miss Teen Maine title, and who on Tuesday became the first Mainer to place in the top three in national-level competition.
According to pageant officials, the two-hour live telecast was seen by an estimated 250 million people in 24 countries. Contestants from all 50 United States and the District of Columbia arrived in Wichita on Aug. 1 for two weeks of rehearsals and preliminary competitions. Aselton's family cheering section joined her there last Thursday.
