EIN IBRAHIM, Israel (AP) -- Arab attackers armed with knives and axes killed three soldiers and wounded a fourth early yesterday morning at an Israeli army camp near the occupied West Bank, army officials reported.
General [Ehud Barak] said investigators were uncertain whether the attackers were Arab citizens of Israel or Palestinians who came across the so-called Green Line dividing Israel from the occupied West Bank.
One Israeli soldier, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the new recruits seemed totally unprepared. "I saw a 30-year-old man crying. They didn't even know how to load a gun," the soldier said.
