 Abstract (Document Summary)

The Gaza Strip has been the setting for some of the most violent scenes of the four-week uprising in the Palestinian territories - from the death in a cross fire of 12-year-old Mohammed al-Dura on Sept. 30 to yesterday's suicide blast near an Israeli army post that killed bomber [Iyad Nabil] al-Arair, 24, and lightly wounded an Israeli soldier.

This impoverished town on the Gaza-Egypt border could generate far more violence if the Palestinian Authority were to declare statehood. Palestinians have long chafed over Israeli control over their borders with the outside world. Any attempt to assert sovereignty over Rafah's border fences and crossing point would likely draw a fierce Israeli response. And the fighting here, which has thus far killed two Palestinians, could seem just a prelude for what's to come.
