"He was a very intense competitor, a very on-top-of-you type of coach," said Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, who with former NBA great Dave Bing played for [Fred Lewis] in the mid-1960s. "We pressed and ran and played much like the game is played today. Our senior year, we averaged 99 points a game, at that time a record. He was ahead of his time coaching-wise."
Wednesday, 49ers coach George Seifert appeared to lash out at [Bill Walsh] after Walsh reportedly recommended offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan as the new coach of the Seattle Seahawks.
Wesley Stevens, a former Western Illinois University men's basketball coach, died Christmas Day in Macomb, Ill. He was 75. A 1982 inductee into the WIU Athletic Hall of Fame, Stevens was 18-7-4 in three seasons. He played at Purdue. . . . Top seed Kornelia Varro of Hungary outlasted unseeded Keiko Tokuda of Clifton, N.J., 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, to gain the Girls 16 tennis final in the Port Washington (N.Y.) International Championships. Varro will oppose Min-Lee Nam of Korea, who stopped Agnes Wiski of New York, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
