Abstract (Document Summary)
At its simplest, backdating options is the practice of picking an exercise price for options that is lower than the current stock price and saying they were granted earlier than they were. Since executives and other employees who get options profit from the difference between the option price and the current stock price, the artificial grant date gives them an immediate paper profit.
