Two years, 9,000 samples uncover 58 violations Indeed, state and federal inspection reports and regulatory correspondence underscore the logistical challenge of disposing of the waste produced by the slaughter of 17,000 hogs a day, seven days a week - a challenge that intensified two years ago when Morrell began recovering a valuable blood-thinning compound from the entrails of butchered hogs. Since May 2008, the period covered under the civil penalty, the plant has reported 58 violations of its river discharge permit in the more than 9,000 samples taken.
