Abstract (Document Summary)
Because good old Adam Smith's "Invisible Hand" of capitalism slowly has been erasing them, having decided they aren't economically necessary. Concurrently, as the farm and town populations dwindled, the service economy that had helped small towns thrive started to die as well, with fewer banks, car dealers and cafes needed to serve an ever-smaller population.
