"The average size of a junior sailing program is 100 kids," said Jack Heacock, a historian for the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association, which includes 14 boat clubs along the bay's 42 miles. "The oldest competitive sailing trophy in the United States, as far as anyone can tell, is the Toms River Challenge Cup, which dates from 1871," said Bob O'Brien of the New Jersey Museum of Boating in Point Pleasant.
