When U2's Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen set out to refashion composer Lalo Schifrin's Mission: Impossible theme, they weren't sure they could pull it off.
The Brian De Palma film, starring Tom Cruise, opens May 22. Clayton and Mullen haven't seen the update of the '60s spy-caper series but recall it as ``great fantasy-world television for us in Ireland,'' Clayton says. ``We're fans of the TV show from a nostalgic point of view. And we knew the tune really well. It would have been mad not to take on this project.''
From opposite sides of the Atlantic -- bassist Clayton in New York and drummer Mullen in Dublin -- they concocted separate versions and allowed PolyGram to pick its favorite. The label wanted both. Working weekends between U2 recording sessions, Clayton and Mullen completed the two tracks and commissioned six remixes from hot DJs like Junior Vasquez.
