Abstract (Document Summary)

ASIMO, at just under 4 feet and 100 pounds, is designed to be big enough to be useful but not so big that it overwhelms its human companions. Honda, which unveiled the robot in Japan this week, has not announced commercial plans to sell ASIMO, says spokesman Jeffrey Smith. But he emphasizes the robot's potential to help people with mobility impairments. "It would provide a person without mobility the ability to move because it would be an extension of themselves," he says. "Think of the potential of how that would give that person a better life."
