NEW YORK - Jean Harris - the girls' school headmistress convicted of murdering Scarsdale Diet doctor Herman Tarnower - will soon go free.
Convicted in 1981 after a trial that captivated the nation with its seamy details of upper-class love gone wrong, Harris was being readied for heart surgery Tuesday when word came that Gov. Mario Cuomo had granted her clemency.
