Ten percent have a more severe form and need insulin injections; the rest have ``type II,'' which is non-insulin-dependent and develops gradually, mainly in people over 40. Some insulin is produced, but not enough to meet the body's needs.
None were diabetic at the beginning, but Mexican-Americans have about triple the type II diabetes risk of non-Hispanics in the USA, [Michael Stern] says.
