Martin Scorsese's controversial The Last Temptation of Christ, opening in just nine cities, grossed the most per theater. The film took in $401,211; that's $44,579 per screen - a Universal Pictures record.
Leaders of protests against Temptation conceded they may have boosted receipts. ``It certainly appears we helped Universal,'' says Tim Penland, a religious consultant to Universal who quit over the film.
