Abstract (Document Summary)

UCLA has been to 11 consecutive NCAA tournaments - the third longest current streak behind Indiana (17) and Virginia (13) - and [Sigi Schmid]'s teams won the 1985 and 1990 national championships in five Final Four appearances between 1984 and 1990.

An assistant to U.S. national team head coach Bora Milutinovic, Schmid has placed 16 players on the national team, including five on this year's World Cup team (Cobi Jones, Paul Caligiuri, Brad Friedel, Mike Lapper and Joe-Max Moore) and four on the 1990 roster (Caligiuri, Chris Henderson, Dave Vanole and Paul Krumpe).

"I don't think there's any real secrets to coaching," says Schmid, who played for UCLA on NCAA runners-up in 1972 and '73 and a semifinal loser in 1974.
