Abstract (Document Summary)

Terms of the contract were not revealed. However, British newspapers reported Newcastle paid a $525,000 transfer fee to obtain [Brad Friedel]'s rights, and it is believed he will earn approximately $70,000 a year, not including bonuses.

Because Friedel chose to play with the national team for per diem ($40 a day) rather than sign a contract with the U.S. Soccer Federation, he collects the transfer fee. Had he signed with the USSF, he would have gotten 10% of the transfer fee. Friedel will report to Newcastle following the World Cup.
