Some Republicans revise stances on firearms checks Wave of political backlash prompts revised measure
On Wednesday evening, (Larry) Craig beat back an effort on the Senate floor to mandate background checks on all firearm sales at gun shows. Instead, the Republican-led Senate voted 53-45 to adopt a Craig alternative to encourage voluntary checks.
"I can name a dozen (senators) who are as upset as I am," Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., said as the day began. Joining him was Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., a GOP presidential candidate, who worked to revise Craig's measure.
As the Senate convened Thursday, Craig told Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., a leading gun-control supporter, that he had erred in his alternative for voluntary background checks.
