Abstract (Document Summary)

In her inventive first novel, Kaaterskill Falls, Allegra Goodman creates a fictional community where the saying is literally true.

Every summer, ultra-Orthodox Jews headed by Rav Kirshner, who led his flock out of prewar Germany and has guided it ever since, migrate to Kaaterskill Falls in upstate New York.

The novel follows the fortunes of a variety of the town's residents, including less observant Jews and local gentiles. But on its most compelling level, it is the story of Elizabeth Shulman, the Orthodox mother of five daughters who is reconsidering the slot she has occupied since birth.
