Abstract (Document Summary)

Comedian Drew Carey camped out in a booth at the hip eatery Barney's Beanery on Tuesday morning, happily breaking the law -- and in front of a media horde, no less.

The Drew Carey Show star puffed away on a cigarette in defiance of a California law, in effect since Jan. 1, banning smoking in restaurants and bars. He was the principal puffer in a smoke-in that had two purposes: to protest the law and to generate publicity for a new book, Jacob Sullum's For Your Own Good (The Free Press, $25), due in stores April 8.
