A sweeping study indicates that stick margarine and any foods made with hardened vegetable oils are shortcuts to heart disease.

These ingredients, also used in shortenings, prepared foods and commercial baked goods, raise a person's risk of heart disease by as much as one-third -- and pose more of a risk than saturated fats, researchers say in today's New England Journal of Medicine.
